Hypnagogia portraits an imaginary cosmic journey of the Self that crash ends into a blinding sun.

Closer (Portal)

Martina Bertoni

Movements like molten lava, an open portal to a different speed of time and width in space

˚。.

From a small and simple melodic cell, this track develops into an intertwined movement of drones. It's about slowing down time and losing track of the space that surrounds us and at the same time moving closer to a different state of perception.

on her new album martina bertoni continues to explore the sonic possibilities of her instrument which she uses as sound source - sounds which are then processed, adding reverb, feedback and sub-bass frequencies and thus crafting sonic sculptures, rich of atmospheres and frictions.
„the inspiration for the title „music for empty flats“ comes from a fraction of time during last winter, while i was visiting iceland. i had the strange opportunity to spend lots of time listening to music, alone in a brand new but unoccupied - therefore completely naked - empty flat in the suburbs of reykjavík. it was christmas, it was constantly dark, outside there was snow, inside there was this strange dystopian empty space in which i could listen to my favourite pieces of music in complete solitude. this is when i started sketching the new record.“ says bertoni.

the resulting seven new tracks deliver masterfully crafted experimental ambient / drone, dense and intense but fragile and sensitive at the same time. A more than impressive new artistic statement by martina bertoni, recommended not only for fans of hildur guðnadóttir, giulio aldinucci or lawrence english!

‘All the ghosts are gone’ is the first full length album from Berlin based cellist and composer Martina Bertoni, and follows the release of her two EPs, respectively in 2018 and 2019.

It’s a journal of a process of recovery, that was formulated during a time of physical and mental exhaustion. The compositions are recollections of emotional landscapes, born from a moment of fracture and conflict.

Martina describes the process: ‘ This record has been born during a time in which I had no strength. Neither physical nor psychological. Waking up everyday and composing was a way for me to regain my identity and finding back my balance. I started to explore what was unknown to me, as I wanted my cello to sound completely alien. I had to find my own ways to get the sounds I liked: grainy, opaque, dusty…I did not want melodies nor did I want harmonies. I wanted to dig deep into the sonic textures that my cello could give me.’.

The main drive during the seven months of composition of the record was the will of finding a more concise way of composing and depicting the sonic world that Bertoni lives in. The eight tracks of ‘All the ghosts are gone’ are a chronicle of a disorganised reconstruction. They evoke desegregated landscapes, in which the voice of the cello is a hazy narrator in a hypnagogic state.

'All the ghosts are gone' is due to be released on the 8th of January 2020 by FALK as digital download and tape cassette limited edition.
